What is a Model Release?
A model release permits a company to use photos or images without fear of violating the person’s rights. A company or business must, in general, obtain a person’s permission before using a person’s image publicly. A model release is a document that is signed by a person who is going to be photographed or videoed.
What business needs a Model Release?
Any business that will be photographing, videoing, or interviewing a person should have that person first sign a model release. Also, any business that will be using a person’s image or likeness in any public forum, such as in advertising, marketing, or web/social media should obtain a signed release. A well-crafted model release will help a business avoid potential liability for claims such as defamation, invasion of privacy, right of publicity, and copyright infringement.
